Climbing Team:
Dan Whitmore, Tony Bundschu, and Geoff Endresen
Here are some pictures and descriptions of our adventure:
- A view of Mt Rainier, as we arrived at the
parking lot at Paradise on Friday evening.
- about 10 AM. Dand and Tony wonder how long
is this Muir Snowfield?
- about 11 AM. Geoff thinks it's a good
time for a Break.
- about 2 PM. We made the hike from Paradise
to Muir in about 6 hours and setup our tent.
- about 12 AM. After 4-5 hours of
"sleep", with headlamps on, Dan and Tony are just about
ready to rope up and go. We started on the trail about 12:30 AM.
- about 7 AM. It's cold and windy.
We can't stop too long, but the goal is in sight.
We reached the Summit Crater about 8:30 AM, a full 8 hours since leaving Camp Muir.
- about 9AM. This is the view of the Crater
atop Mt. Rainier. It's almost 1/2 mile across.
- about 9:20 AM. Since July 2000, Dan and
Geoff have had this dream of summitting Rainier.
- about 9:20 AM. At the top of Washington
State, Dan, Geoff and Tony, wish Bob Whitmore (pop) a Happy
Birthday.
- about 10:30 AM. Called Lynette from
this spot, near a deep crevasse.
- about 11 AM. The look down seems so
far away as we slog down the Emmons glacier to the top of the Dissapointment
Cleaver.
- about 1 PM. At the bottom of
Dissapointment Cleaver, we wait to cross the Ingraham Flats at about 11000
ft.
We reached Camp Muir about 2PM, about 4 hours since we left the summit crater. We packed up camp and headed down to Paradise
- about 6 PM. A great view of the mountain
as we look up to where we were only 8 hours before.
- about 7 PM. A cheer for the team, a toast
with Rainier Beer. It's liquid bread.
- The map of route downloaded from Geoff's
GPS unit.
